I used to have a granddaddy who told me that a good walking stick was akin to the support of a loving family in most situations. They help you get along when times are tough, they hold you up through it all, and they stick with you when the going is tough (sorry I couldn’t resist).
Puns and reminiscing aside, the modernization of the walking stick to what we now know as trekker poles has been a thing of great achievement. They compact and fit into the loops of our packs for storage now, being wholly portable and convenient. There is even an art to using them now, for the most efficiency.
If you don’t have any yet and are considering some, try the garage sale at your local REI. I have found a few there. For something faster try these Leki poles from here. They are very light, and they will not wear out your hands over the course of a long hike. These Cascade poles on Amazon are another great option. More affordable, and durable. You can get them here!
Of course nothing beats a great stick, though. I still get that little kid nostalgia when I think back to the joys of selecting one taller than myself. You can’t go wrong with the Gandalf look.
Whatever you decide, if it helps you enjoy the great outdoors it’s the right one for you. Hope you’re in the woods, Flatlanders!
