Hidden Gem – Exploring the North Shore
Probably one of the greatest hidden treasures is without a doubt, the Lake Superiors North Shore, also simply known as the North Shore. It’s funny, I’ve traveled hither and thither doing adventures all around the States, up and down mountains from Colorado, to Utah, to Wyoming, always looking for those untouched places, far from the busy hustle and bustle of traffic and people.
Funny thing? In the middle of nowhere, at some far-flung trailhead in Wyoming hours from the nearest city … it’s usually busier than the North Shore. Strange? It is strange, but not that surprising. The problem is that all the popular spots, well, have been popular for a long time and are not getting to the point of being overused.
What once used to be places of solitude and relaxation have become overcrowded, with the landscape showing wear and tear. It’s also no fun to plan a trip for months, imagine how awesome it’s going to be, and then show up at the trailhead only to find that there is “no room left in the inn,” the trails packed, and no campsites available. Talk about a bummer.
The North Shore.
The North Shore is one of the best-kept secrets of the Great White North. Nestled along the rocky, wind and wave-torn shores of Lake Superior, it’s a literal paradise of waterfalls, stone beaches, and lost forests stretching as far as you have time to explore, and farther!
I’ve spent days trail running and fast packing the scenic and hidden SHT (Superior Hiking Trail) for 20+ miles a day and only seen 1 other person the entire time!
Not only that, there are many State Parks, Waterfalls, and trails that stretch miles along the rugged Lake Superior North Shore, there are small towns that are perfect for vacations, families, or just adventurers looking for a quick break. It’ s not overcrowded, has the small-town vibe, and is encased in some of the most scenic wilderness you can find.
The best part? It’s year-round adventure far from the maddening crowds.
Also, here is some links to gear I’ve used in the past on my North Shore backpacking adventures.
