Des Moines Public School Debacle. Guns. ICE. Good Lord.

So, Iowa has made its winding way to the front page of every major news media. Who would have thought the quiet corn fields could have catapulted us to fame that quickly? There are a few things that will stir the hornet’s nest, like the combination of politics, education, and guns. Yikes.

The best I can do is report what is currently being shared and known at this point. However, this is an interesting story because of the perfect storm of cultural awakening that is currently unfolding.

DMPS Superintendent chased by ICE. Gun found. Previous weapons charges unearthed.

Okay, so what do we know that allegedly happened so far? What are the actual facts of what is happening, no discussion of politics yet, we can save that for later.

  • The DMPS Superintendent allegedly does not have a legal US status.
  • He allegedly fled from federal officers
  • He allegedly was using a DMPS vehicle.
  • A loaded handgun was found in the vehicle.
  • Cash and a knife were found in the vehicle.
  • He allegedly had a previous firearms charge.
  • He allegedly had a previous deportation order.

Well, this is going to make for interesting fodder is it not? Putting politics aside, let’s discuss the moderate view of what has happened, then view it from both the Left and Right.

We know that this situation is going to be a political hot potato, and it will be incredibly interesting to see how it impacts upcoming elections and maneuvering.

For example, where will Rob Sand take a stance on this?

What does a moderate think?

Let’s take a gander at what a moderate, down-the-middle voter from Iowa would think. Let’s try to remain unbiased and simply discuss what allegedly happened. How would they view it?

The views of the far Left and far right are obvious, and we can get there.

  • Allegedly fled from Federal officers.

Any moderate is going to simply say this is a bad idea. But, at the same time, recognize that if ICE is involved, the situation is clearly fluid and ambitious.

But, we are NOT talking about the average person here. We are referring to a public servant in a position of authority. What it comes down to is that the main Street of America generally sides with all law enforcement, and you would never find a majority advocating or suggesting someone flee Federal officers. It will never end well.

  • Previous alleged firearms charges.

This is where it is going to get a little sticky if it is indeed allegedly true that he has a previous firearms charge.

At best, this will be viewed as a PT nightmare and very poor decision-making skills on whoever was involved in the hiring process. Like it or not, the education of children is taken extremely seriously, and someone with firearms charges, regardless of how they came about, shows poor judgment.

Choices have consequences, and you will find no majority of parents willing to bend the rules and turn a blind eye when it comes to firearms and children.

  • A loaded handgun was in the DMPS vehicle he was allegedly driving and abandoned during the chase.

Now, this is most likely where the greatest concern will arise with most moderates. One can also use this as a litmus test when reading a news article, assessing the honesty and dedication to unbiased reporting that you encounter.

Right, Left, Middle… it simply does not matter. If the alleged reports are to be believed they a loaded handgun was found in the DMPS vehicle of the person in question, AND it is simply illegal, for a long time, for anyone that has no legal status to possess firearms or ammo … this is the most important part of the situation.

For anyone to appear remotely normal, they would have to speak against a DMPS employee that does not have legal status from carrying a loaded handgun in a DMPS vehicle, a clear violation of federal law that will be impossible to talk ones way out of.

You may not agree with his lack of legal status, but you can’t simply disregard the law just because you dislike it. If you have no legal status, you cannot, and should not be allowed to carry a firearm in this country for obvious reasons.

Immigration Status.

This is where things get sticky, and probably where most of the mainstream media will spend its time. No surprise there.

That is what it is. The reports are alleging a 2024 deportation order from a judge.

This will make the new weapons change ever worse, if it is true. It’s hard to imagine a situation in which any judge or jury will look kindly upon what happened. Anyone with even a questionable immigration status should have steered far clear of any weapons; clearly, any problem with a firearm would make a bad situation worse.

Who’s responsible?

One thing most people will miss considering is the optics of everything that has happened. Getting embroiled in political arguments about immigration, what is right, and what is wrong, based on someone’s opinion.

Here is the bottom line. More than one thing can be true at once.

We can and should appreciate anyone willing to serve in difficult positions over long periods of time. Once this is clear, any honest person can look at the alleged suspect’s history and agree he has dedicated much of his life to children in a positive way.

Something else is also true at the same time. The suspect broke federal law by carrying a loaded pistol with his current legal status, pending those charges being validated. Also, he allegedly ran from law enforcement, which never ends well.

These things, combined with previous weapons charges, would call into question the return of any such individual to their “same old job.” That is simply ridiculous, and any political party should use common sense when aligning itself with such calls from activists. It will be spun later to make them look poorly.

The general public isn’t always sheep and would never agree with such things.
