Exploring Lake Superior National Forest
One of the best-kept secrets in the Midwest is the Lake Superior National Forest. Nestled in the tall pines of Northern Minnesota, close to that wondrous North Shore, the Lake Superior National Forest is home to wilderness and adventure unknown to most people who call the Midwest home.
Most who visit the far north keep to the North Shore, driving through Two Harbors, Lutsen, Grand Maris, and other beautiful lake shore towns that offer waterfalls, rock beaches, State Parks, and shopping. You can’t blame people, can you?
But, little do they know, a 30-minute drive west will leave the crowds and concrete far away and a distant memory. Your adventure can easily start around Finland, MN, with untamed miles of wilderness forest, countless lakes, and endless lakeshore campsites that are … free. Yes. Free.

If you have a strong heart and a desire for adventure, to see the road less traveled, than you are doing yourself a disservice if you have not explored the beauties of the Lake Superior National Forest. Neslted between Lake Superior and the Boundary Waters Wilderness area … there is a lot of adventure awaiting.
- Endless lakes including trout stocked lakes.
- Miles of hiking trails in and around lakes.
- Canoeing and kayaking opportunities galore.
- Many beautiful free lake shore campsites.
- ATV rentals for the brave.
Honestly, I can’t believe more people don’t explore the Lake Superior National Forest. There are few easy to access places I would suggest checking out.
Number one on your list should be Hogback Lake and Backcountry Campsites. Hogback, and it’s connected lake Scarp, are stocked with trout, have miles of hiking trails that go around other lakes, awesome campsites, toilets, and solitude!
Divide Lake is great as well, it has campsites and fully stocked with trout, and includes a hiking trail for the brave as well.
